The Copped Hall Trust
Copped Hall was built in 1750-8 by the architect John Sanderson for the owner John Conyers. The mansion was extended in 1895 for the then owner E J Wythes. The Mansion was burnt down in 1917 and asset striped in 1950. The M25 was built through a corner of the Grade II listed landscaped park in 1980.
The Mansion is superbly sited on high ground at the end of a ridge. Like many of these houses, it was built on an ancient site of human habitation. Recorded history starts in 13th century when there was a mansion on the site. The Abbots of Waltham held the property from 1350 until 1537 when Henry VIII took it from them. Elizabeth 1 gave the estate to Sir Thomas Heneage who built a substantial mansion incorporating parts of the earlier building. Almost all of this structure was pulled down in 1750 when the present house was built on a site a few hundred yards to the south east. The Copped Hall Trust has made substantial progress in the last 13 years to restore the mansion to its former glory. There are many functions held at Copped Hall and every third Sunday in the month there is a guided tour which is very interesting and you can see how the Mansion is gradually being restored. For more information of events visit their website at www.coppedhalltrusst.org.uk or see the Out and About section in our paper.

Music@LMC started in 1988 as a result of musical interest both inside the Church and from the local community. With this in mind we extend a warm welcome to all, regardless of any faith commitment, or none.
Our aim is to encourage young musicians at the beginning of their professional careers and to bring to the local community music of the highest quality. To provide a venue for music-lovers in the Loughton area to enjoy live classical music without having to journey into London.
Over the years we have been treated to concerts by many soloists and groups that have gone on to perform in premier locations around the country and internationally. Standards have been high and whilst we are now broadening the appeal of Music@LMC, the aims remain the same and the search for new and experienced talent goes on.
We hope that you will enjoy this season and we look forward to seeing you as much as possible.

Are You A Bookworm?
St. John’s Literature Group
We are a friendly crowd who enjoy talking about anything we have read especially during the tea and biscuit break, when the refreshments are provided by volunteers. At Christmas the meeting is much more festive.
Occasionally the group is fortunate enough to have the pleasure of listening to a guest speaker who gives both the introduction and a short presentation of a book of his choice. Otherwise the group members always select a book and a volunteer kindly introduces it. Comments may be full and free but are never acrimonious.
The selection of the next book can take time when various suggestions are put forward but eventually on a vote a choice is made.
Anyone who is a lover of books and enjoys a discussion is welcome. The literature Group is pleased to greet new members who would add variety of ideas and share the pleasure of reading. All ages welcome, from teenagers to the retired.

WALTHAMSTOW
Greek Theatre Players - Affiliated to APEX Arts
The Arts Council for Waltham Forest
The Greek Theatre Players
This year's production of 'The Tempest' at Copped Hall was our fourth at this magnificent venue. The estate provides us with a fascinating choice of sets, and each performance so far has been sited in a different section of the garden.
The Greek Theatre Players are this year celebrating their 50th Anniversary. They take their name from a unique amphitheatre built in 1924 in the garden of Walthamstow School for Girls. Each year since 1958 they have performed a play, almost without exception a Shakespeare, in this grand, but intimate, and still too little-known venue. With costumes from the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon the company provides high quality entertainment. The 'Players' themselves are from various local theatrical groups, namely the Drama Workshop of Waltham Forest, The Wanstead Players and The Woodhouse Players, and come together once a year to put on a performance of Shakespeare in The Greek Theatre in the grounds of Walthamstow School for Girls, Church Hill, Walthamstow.
This year’s production continues there until Saturday 28th June 2008. For more details about this interesting company please visit our website at www.greektheatreplayers.org.uk or, if you would like further information specifically in respect of this year's production, please telephone 0208-551-2958.

Woodford Symphony Orchestra
There are no formal auditions as such, but each new person is offered a term's free attendance, and a mutual decision with the conductor will be made about playing in the forthcoming concert and/or permanent membership towards the end of the term. No general indication of the standard required is made, but members of the orchestra should be able to cope with the demands of major orchestral works after a term's rehearsal. For woodwind and brass players this includes making such transpositions as are necessary to play their instrument from the published orchestral part. (e.g. playing trumpet in E parts on a B flat trumpet). For more information

The Meljon Singers
Since their foundation in 1990, The Meljon Singers have built an enviable reputation for the quality of their music-making. Working with unaccompanied voices and small instrumental groupings, they seek to stretch the boundaries of conventional programming, and to create fresh and vivid concert experiences for their audiences. They are at the forefront in championing neglected works and new composers as well as revisiting gems of the choral repertoire such as their forthcoming performance of Britten’s St Nicolas
Well-known in their local area of Redbridge, they also perform in central London and abroad. Plans are currently under way for tours to Italy in 2009 and Israel as part of Meljon’s 20th Anniversary Season in 2010.
The Meljon Singers occasionally have vacancies for new voices, and welcome applications from enthusiastic singers with sound musical experience and good sight-reading ability. For more information, please visit www.meljon.org.uk or email secretary@meljon.org.uk
